RHODES FURNITURE / DRIVE-THRU
WRITER–CREATIVE SUPERVISOR
All throughout my tenure as McCann's creative supervisor for Rhodes Furniture advertising, the prevailing challenge was to counter the inroads (no pun intended) that the upstart Rooms To Go was making at stealing Rhodes’ market share. Rhodes' management agreed that we should forego attempts at subtlety and strike back by poking fun directly at the principle concept of buying furniture by the roomful. We had a lot of success at reclaiming market share.
In the time since we ran this spot, I've heard a couple of commercials that 'borrowed' the drive thru conceit. My favorite reaction, though, was the woman who said she had to pull off the freeway for her safety because she was laughing so hard when she first heard it on the radio.
RHODES FURNITURE / PEACE AND TRANQUILITY, BROTHER

In this Orwellian future, consumers are force fed furniture by the roomful. Scary. My hat is off to the brass at Rhodes for letting me run with a commercial "for" the competition, albeit satirical and completely negative. I never had so much fun picking out sound effects.
